Michael Poland
RSPB Nature of Farming Award 2008

Michael Poland's Isle of Wight farm, under the project name Wight Conservation, is through to the national final of the Nature of Farming Award which is being organised by the RSPB, BBC Countryfile Magazine, Butterfly Conservation and Plant Life. It is the most prestigious competition in farming conservation and differs from its predecessors by embracing the whole range of wildlife habitats and species.

The winner will be chosen by public vote by going on line at www.rspb.org.uk/farmvote.

When short listing Michael Poland, the judges stated: "The farm is a fine example of how conservation can be integrated into commercial farming, and how livestock selection and management can be used as a conservation tool. Both Michael Poland and the Farm Manager are extremely ambitious and passionate about their animals and the role they play in the farming system. Due to their passion and knowledge, they and the farm are a great example of the successful integration of conservation and farming."

Michael Poland says: "Although I am pleased for our farm, I am more excited about what winning would mean to the Isle of Wight. The Island’s wildlife is exceptional but it is an unsung success story. Winning the award would well and truly boost the Island’s reputation and firmly establish it nationally as an area of excellence for wildlife and conservation."
